I have 2 pigs, one is about 20 lbs and the other is about 35 lbs. They are both coughing. They eat and drink but lay around alot. I have given them both a shot of Antibiotics (LA200) a few days ago and the cough has gotten better but not went away. Should I give them another dose? Or give them something else?

Thanks,

One of them got worse. Breathing really hard and not eatting. I called my vet and he said to give him 3 cc of penacillin for 3 days. He is alot better, eating again but still coughing a little.

Try using Nuflor.  We had the same problem last year and used the Nuflor and it did the trick.  It's a 2 shot treatment; 1 shot & 48 hrs later second shot.

It also could be lungworm.  I had a older boar cough for several weeks.  Tried all that antibiotics and my vet said it could be lungworm.

To treat, use safegard cattle paste.  Treat for 2 times more than actually body weight.

It cured my boar with in two days.

Go to the vet office and get you some swine Excede, Draxxin, or Excenel.  I have had lots of luck with these 3 antibiotics.  The Excede and Draxxin are long-lasting drugs and you only have to give it once.  If you have one that is really sick you may try the Excenel instead for a stronger spike.  But you have to give it three days.  I think they are too little to be infested with lungworms, but a shot of Ivomec ought do the trick.

I had one new gilt come to the barn this past weekend and within a day or so she developed a caugh she was around 50lbs my may litter then picked it up and within a day were in way worse shape. I have talked to several others who have similar problems the only thing I trust to work is Baytril 100 because it is so strong and fast acting and when stuff like this hits it hits hard and fast and if you dont get them back soon enough your going to be wasting your time trying to get them back. 3.75ml per 100lbs for 3 days in the muscle. Some may say that baytril is not intended for use in swine etc. but it has just recently been fda approved for swine usage and has a 28 day withdrawl period. Naxel and draxxin are also two backup drugs if you cant find baytril 100 which is a large animal baytril strength dont get the baytril for use in small animals your best bet to find it is a large animal clinic.

Monitoring worm burdens is accomplished by timely, routine necropsies and fecal examination of market hogs. Strategic deworming programs control this disease quite effectively.

If the cough is not too severe I dispense a guaifenesin-based cough syrup. If guaifenesin is not enough to control the cough I put them on the narcotic cough suppressant, Hycodan. Humidifiers help clear mucous from the throat allowing the dog to breath easier.
