What is the latest on Budd Martin flock, is the USDA in there for Scrapie?

Martin sold to almost 600 buyers over the past fivce years, if the USDA gets the list of the names of the buyers what next? Do then they go to all 600 flocks and if so what do they do at those flocks?

First and foremost this is not to a place to bring up who and who's not being sought after by the USDA.

With that being said I will enlighten you what will possible happened since that seems to be your main concern.  If you look at Bud's past breeding practices you would see that the black face ewes were bred to RR rams. Seems like for 4-5 years that was his primary use. So I would say most the black face ewes were ok being that they would have been at least QR. If you would test those ewes I would say at least 50% were RR.

The dorsets are a different case. If you look at his dispersals he had many of them tested. There were many that were QQ.

Now knowing how the USDA works. The answer to your question would be yes the USDA will track down those sheep that were sold in relations to the one that has been in question that have been infected. Upon release of the list of buyers. Knowing Bud had sheep on several farms there is a possibility that the sheep that was traced back never came in contacted with all the sheep he had. In that case not all sheep will be traced down.

If you are in that trace back then the USDA will come out and put you under quarantine. They will want to test only the sheep that you purchased from the infected flock. If that sheep comes back QQ then they proced to a third eye lid test. If the sheep in question has died then they will test all sheep for codon 171. The ones that are QQ will remain under Quaratine until further testing can be done.

I hope that this helps.

P.S.   I would hope next time you would contact the individual instead of bringing him up on a open forum. Seems like you should know Bud very well since you have been a guest consigner to many of his sales.

Agreed, very much agreed.

I have no idea what is happening if anything.

That said I wondered how the USDA operates with all of this.

Fortunately I have not purchased QQ sheep from Budd or anyone else and have no issues myself with the USDA.

Ben,

If you have puchased sheep from someone and they have a trace back. Then the USDA wil pay you a visit. They will not accept any testing unless you have it done by a certified lab and your vet has filed the correct paper work at time of testing. Which means even if the boughten ewes are RR you would be under quaratine for approx 2 weeks. Which means all intacted males and females can not leave premise. Just remember if the ewes that you have bought from a  trace back flock are not on your premise then they want to know where said ewes are. If they have died or been slaughtered then your entire flock will be subject to testing.  Which means you be under qauratine for a longer period of time.

Thank you.

Fortunately we have not purchased any ewes from any flock with a trace back.

Nor have we purchased any ewes that are not at least QR.

I have an acquaintance in New York who bought a ewe from a flock with a traceback over six years ago will they expect her to still be around over six years later or do they not go back that far?

A freind of mine bought black face ewes from Bud approxmently 3 years ago.  The vet showed up 3 weeks ago and tested every ewe their., because the ewes he bought had lambed their.  Now is hole herd is under quartine and he might night be able to sell for the big easter sales.  I have also herd from the vet that Bud gave them a terrible time.  He went as far to make them get a court order. The vet also said that every buyer who bought their herd wopuld be tested and be quartined in till the result get back.  I have herd that at the moment their is over 70 herds quartined at the present time.
