MY daugther has Down Syndrome, and she showed her first lamb this year at the county fair (3 times!!).  Wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and how to work with them to get the kids really interested (I think she did it this year to please dad :D).  If anyone has any tips, please let me know.  I sure would appreciate it!!  Thanks!!

I think that is totally awesome that she showed sheep!!!!  Being a breeder myself it is always nice to hear about this kids really getting into it.  Here is a suggestion for you, not trying to butt in, and your daughter.  Take her to a few open shows and let her show there.  It doesn't matter how she does in the show but it gets her more show time.  Good luck to both of you and have a blast!!!!  Here is my email if ya wanna chat:  dsmith68@kconline.com

I think that is sooo awsome that your daughter is showing sheep. there is this one little boy in my club that also has DS and i think showing has helped him alot. it has given him the confidence that comes from being part of something special. some times he thinks about giving up because he is so little and it is harder for him. but it is so wonderful to see his face light up when he gets a ribbon. it is so great. he is just so excided and i think just that is the most speacail part not only him but all the other little kids i know is it gives them a sence of pride and belonging:) my only segestion is find an older 4-h or ffa member that is willing to help her out it will make a big difference to have a mentor. i know that helping that little boy was probably one of the best things i could have ever done because now i have a really sweet little freind that is so much like a little brother to me

There was a teenage girl who showed a couple of lambs at the Colorado State Fair that appeared to have Down Syndrome. She had another girl helping her walk the lamb when they moved, because she walked with a limp. I thought she was really cute and she obviously loved her lambs, she kissed them about 40 times. I think it is a great way to get kids outside and involved with something positive!
